Questions we get asked.
These are the ones that come up on every first call, so they are written down rather than waiting for you to ask. If yours is not here, it is one email away.
Before your week
- What do you need from us to start?
For a first conversation, four things, and rough answers are fine:
- Your event, and the city it runs in
- When it runs, and when you lock your venue roster and sponsor packages
- Roughly how many restaurants
- What you use today: a printable passport, a vendor’s app, or nothing yet
- And to actually build it?
Your roster: the Restaurants taking part, where each of their Locations is, and the Food Item on offer at each. Your dates.
Then the branding: one color, one of three Themes, and the words your app uses for your food, plus your logo and the artwork for the icon. The color sets every accent in the app, the Theme sets the typefaces, and the words carry through to the tab labels, the empty states and the pin on the map.
- Whose Apple and Google accounts do the apps go out under?
Yours, and that one is not our call. Apple and Google both want an app published by the organization whose name is on it, so your week goes out under your accounts rather than ours.
It is less work than it sounds. Opening the two accounts is the only part that has to be you: they go in your organization’s name and both have to be business accounts rather than personal ones, and we guide you through it.
After that we manage them, and the artwork, the store listings and the submissions are all ours. Apple and Google will ask you to sign in now and then to accept a changed agreement, and we will tell you when that happens, but that is the whole of it.
- How long does it take?
The apps are the slow part, and it is all at the front. Getting the two developer accounts opened and verified takes a couple of weeks, and that happens once.
The website is quicker. Once we have your data we can have an event online in under a week. The fastest we have gone from a standing start to a live site and both apps submitted was a little under five hours, which we would rather not repeat and would not recommend.
After that first setup it moves faster, because the accounts and the store listings are already there. So tell us your dates and we will work to them. Sooner is better than later.
- What about our website?
You do not have to build one. Your event gets its own site on its own domain, and standing it up is our job: your name, your colors, your roster and your map, live before your dates.
If your organization already has a website, nothing on it has to change. Link across to your event site, or point a page you already have at it as a redirect, whichever suits how you send people places today.
- Who pays for this?
You, and nobody else. We quote once we know what your event involves, so there is no price list here, but who pays is not the complicated part.
- You One agreement, with the organizer. That is the entire commercial relationship.
- Your restaurants Nothing, and there is no mechanism for us to charge them. Whatever you ask venues to contribute is between you and them.
- Your sponsors Nothing. A Sponsor on FoodWeek is a name, a logo and a link on your event. We display it, and that is the whole of it. We sell them nothing.
- Your attendees Nothing. The app is free, there is no in-app purchase, and there are no ads in it.
- We run more than one week. Do we need more than one app?
A Burger Week and a Pizza Week are separate Apps: separate domains, separate store listings, separate icons, all under one Organization. A second year of the same week is a new Event on the App you already have.
Running it
- Do attendees need an account?
Not to look around. The guide, the map, every Food Item and the Leaderboard are open to anyone who opens the app. The login appears at the moment somebody tries to favorite something, collect a Stamp or leave a Rating, so the ask lands when they already want something rather than at the front door.
There is no password. They type an email address, get a six-digit code, and they are in.
- When can people collect Stamps?
Through your Event’s dates.
A venue that only serves its item at certain times, a late night menu or a brunch, can have its own Special Hours window on top of that, and the app puts the window’s own label on the item.
- Can we change something in the middle of the week?
Yes. You change it and it is true from then on: the next time somebody opens the app, they have all the updates. No reprint, and nothing for anyone to re-download.
You can mark a Food Item sold out at one Location without touching the others, and sold-out is set as an expiry rather than a switch, so it clears itself at the time you set instead of waiting for somebody to remember.
- What do we have when the week is over?
A one-page recap for each Restaurant, with that venue’s own views, Stamps, favorites and ratings, ready to print or forward. Ten CSV exports covering everyone who took part, sliced by what they did. Nothing reaches a restaurant unless you send it.
Next step
Ask us the one that isn’t here
Tell us about your event: when it runs, roughly how many venues, and when you lock your roster. We will tell you what it takes.
