Moving across

You already run this week.

A week worth putting in an app has usually been running for years. Whichever of these three you are starting from, most of what happens next is the same. The differences are worth knowing first.

You run it on paper.

There is nothing to migrate.

Your roster is already a list: the Restaurants taking part, where each of their Locations is, and the Food Item on offer at each. That list becomes your Event, and the addresses are geocoded and checked to land inside your city, so the Stamp geofence is right without anyone touching a coordinate.

The printed passport becomes the Passport, and the difference an organizer feels is that it counts itself. Nobody is collecting cards at the end of the week and nobody is adding them up.

The map becomes a map: every Location on it, pins in your colors, and directions that hand off to Apple Maps, Google Maps or whatever the phone already uses.

What paper cannot do is change. A restaurant that drops out on Tuesday is a change you make on Tuesday, and the next time somebody opens the app they have all the updates.

You already have an app.

The first question is whose account it is in.

It is worth finding out before anything else, because that one answer decides most of what follows. Your app sits in an App Store Connect account and a Google Play account, and either your organization controls those or somebody else does.

If they are yours, your FoodWeek build goes out as an update to the listing you already have. Same listing, same store page, and everybody who installed it gets it the way they get any other update.

If they are not, there is no way to move a listing you do not control. Your week gets a new listing instead, and the people who had the old app install the new one. That is worth knowing on the first call rather than the last.

A domain you already own works either way. Keep it and point it at us, or hand it over and we hold it alongside the others. Both are fine and it is your call.

Either way, what lives inside the old app stays there:

  • Accounts. Whoever signed in to your existing app is not signed in to this one. They make one the first time they want to favorite something or collect a Stamp, and there is no password to move because there is no password.
  • History. Stamps, favorites and ratings collected in another product do not come across. There is no import path between one and the other.
  • Store reviews. A listing you keep keeps the reviews it has. A new listing starts at none, which is the other half of the account question above.

What happens to your website →

You have not run it yet.

Then you are not switching.

You are starting, and the rest of this site is written for you. There is no old data to carry, no listing to work around, and no domain question to settle.

The one thing worth starting early is the two developer accounts. Opening and verifying them takes a couple of weeks, and it is the part of the timeline that is least in our hands.
